Finally a chance to catch the Lonley Tree during an autumnal morning on the Llyn Padarn, in North Wales. Hopefully you will all agree, it wasn't a wasted trip with some amazing blue hour results...
Frozen Waters of The Lonely Tree During Autumnal Blue Hour

What an truly extraordinary morning it turned out to be. We seemed to arrive at just the perfect moment, so fortunate to be witnesses of the delicate, awe-inspiring transition from the depths of night to the soft, luminous glow of dawn at the serene location of Llyn Padarn and The Lonely Tree. It was as if time itself slowed down, granting us a rare glimpse into the magical awakening of this historic landscape. I never truly imagined that The Lonely Tree could appear so serene, so tranquil, as if it had become one with the gentle morning air, standing quietly as a silent guardian of the lake’s secret beauty. Its gnarled branches reached out like a comforting embrace, reflected in the still waters, adding an almost mystical quality to the scene.

When I first arrived, the world was cloaked in darkness, the sky a deep, velvety black that seemed to swallow everything in its quiet embrace. Yet, as the moments passed, both Llyn Padarn and The Lonely Tree gradually seemed to breathe with a new life, awakening slowly from their nightly slumber. The darkness was replaced by a subtle play of soft hues—hints of pale pinks, warm peaches, and gentle lilacs — colours that gently painted the horizon, hinting at the sun’s imminent rise. The lake, so still and reflective, captured this ethereal palette perfectly, creating a mirror-like surface that shimmered with a mesmerizing glow.

It was almost as if this silent, sacred moment was a quiet prayer, a harmonious symphony composed by nature itself. The delicate light caressed the water and the ancient branches of The Lonely Tree, transforming the scene into a living masterpiece of calm and quiet majesty. The air was crisp and fresh, carrying a faint scent of dew and wildflowers, inviting us to pause and truly immerse ourselves in the profound peace that surrounds these timeless landmarks. This early morning tableau seemed to whisper stories of age-old resilience, solitude, and the unspoken bond between nature and humanity. In that tranquil moment, we felt genuinely privileged—like spectators privileged enough to witness a secret ritual of the earth, one that encourages us to reflect and cherish the enduring beauty and serenity of this extraordinary landscape.

Thankfully my little princess Evelyn was with me to experience such an amazing morning. Feel free to drop in and check out all her photographs here.

Autumnal Lonley Tree

Route Details

It goes without saying that The Lonley Tree is the most photographed trees in North Wales. Llanberis and Llyn Padarn are well visited by photographers, mountain hikers, train enthusiasts and plenty more.

So ensure your get there in plenty of time to avoid the crouds.

  • Before setting off, perhaps use the satnav to locate the Lone Tree Cafe, which is located directly opposite the Lonley Tree and has a small paid for parking area. Thankfully however there are a few area’s on the side road that are not double yellow lines, so if you get there early enough, its free parking.
  • Once your parked up, thankfully the tree is only 100-200 yards away. As you walk into the main car park, bear to your left and head for Lyn Pardarn rather than follow the tarmaced path and within minutes you will be looking at the Lonely Tree and the infamous wooden bench overlooking it.

Am I Back or Just Back In Wales…

Hi again it’s is nice to see you again as you might already know hi it is Evelyn here…

Someone got me up at 6.00 am #rude. A fun fact about the lonely tree if you go to the side of it, it looks like a reindeer (just to get you in the Christmas spirit).
