For an autumnal lunch break with a camera in Alkrington Woods Nature Reserve, focus your walk on the scenic river paths and around the lakes to capture vibrant foliage and wildlife. The reserve offers excellent opportunities for nature photography, with a mix of mature woodlands, the River Irk, and several fishing lodges.
The River Irk & Bridges: The river flows through the woods, offering dynamic shots of rushing water, especially near bridges like the old Lever Bridge (the oldest surviving bridge in the region). The “Big Wier” is another specific water feature mentioned as a potential photo spot. The autumn colours of the trees lining the river will provide a beautiful backdrop.
The small lakes/fishing lodges are ideal for capturing reflections of the autumn foliage and observing waterfowl like mute swans, herons, kingfishers, and cormorants. Look for herons perched in trees or turtles basking by the water.
Mature Woodland Areas: Explore the older parts of the wood for large, established trees like oak, sycamore, and horse chestnut, which put on a great autumn display. Look for interesting textures, fungi, and natural light filtering through the canopy.
Foliage and Ground Details: Autumn is perfect for macro photography. Look for fallen golden acorns, conkers, and intricate spider webs on the forest floor or among the branches.
You are likely to capture shots of various birds and small animals:
Birds: Look for kingfishers, herons, cormorants, goosanders, jays, greater spotted woodpeckers, and various tit species around the water and in the trees.
Mammals: Grey squirrels are abundant and busy foraging for nuts during this season.
Insects: Look for late-season butterflies and moths such as the peacock or red admiral.
It appeared parking was going to be an issue, as the satnav insisted on taking me down a public road to park on te street, but after a little driving around I found the officail car park. Thankfully it was obviously a quiet period and parking was ample. Can imaging during busy periods with both fishing lakes and woodlands it could become full quickly. Thankfully there is plenty of street parking available in the local areas as well, but as always pay attention to any street parking signage.

Hi again it’s is nice to see you again as you might already know hi it is Evelyn here…
Someone got me up at 6.00 am #rude. A fun fact about the lonely tree if you go to the side of it, it looks like a reindeer (just to get you in the Christmas spirit).
As I carefully navigate the uneven, rocky terrain, the air is thick with the earthy scent of mineral-rich soil — a heady mixture that evokes both nostalgia and awe.
It’s been on radar for a while. But the Mach Loop is a location for serious photographers. Amateur like me perhaps not best suited, but hey how will I learn if I don’t push myself or even try???
The skys were clear and all I could think about was how today was the perfect day to photograph the Manx Rose, over on Anglesey. The tide would be out and the sun would be setting in just the right place.
Last night I knew I wanted to see the Dolphins; we checked when the high tide will be. It was at 12:56pm so about lunch time. We wanted to go there at the highest tide because
As I leisurely strolled along the shoreline, the stillness of the night enveloped the scene in an almost surreal tranquility Point of Ayr Lighthouse Summer Sunset. Almost as if time itself had momentarily paused to appreciate the quiet beauty before me. The darkness of the sky was so deep and velvety that it contrasted sharply with the solitary silhouette of the lighthouse, which stood tall and unwavering, a silent guardian against the encroaching night.
An amazing little wander around the old quarry and lake at Dorothea Quarry in the welsh village of Talysarn in the Snowdonia National Park region. Within minutes of arriving, calmness and serene views were springing up everywhere.
After settling into the starting point near Pont-y-Pair, the trail gently dips into the lush greenery that lines the riverbank. The air is filled with the gentle murmur of flowing water and the distant calls of songbirds…
As the gentle sea breeze whispers through the rigging and the distant call of seagulls echoes across the bay, stepping aboard the Galeon Andalucia feels like embarking on a voyage back in time.
As always, watching the Dinas Dinlle Golden Hour Sunset from the caravan window and just knew had to get out there with the camera…
